Jeanette Dias (aka JinSu) is a ceramicist from Connecticut - by way of India. Her work gives customers a chance to take part in her journey with Spirit through clay.

Art courses through her veins’ is an apt description of her relationship with pottery and ceramics. She learnt early in life that creativity was her forte. Clay play became her favorite when she discovered the strength and fragility of the ware at any given stage.

Degree in hand and a devoted partner by her side, marriage and family came easy to her. She happily settled into the role of wife and mother; art took a backseat while she enthusiastically tended to her family.

Sadly, nine months after her youngest daughter was born, Jeanette was diagnosed with Retinal Pigmentosa, a progressive eye disorder that clearly overwhelmed her. So she went back to school to learn all she could about this new-found disability as well as her youngest daughter’s sudden allergies.

She began to develop a love for science - especially food science - as she toyed around with culinary preparations that brought great relief to both her daughter’s and her physical condition. Sadly, she was not in a mentally happy place, as the burden of her ailment occupied the greater part of her everyday thoughts. It was then that she was reminded about her love for art, and she dove back into ceramics.

The ‘pastime’ job of a Clay Maker at a New Haven Art School helped channel her energy. It diverted her mind from pessimism to the very platform she needed, to rediscover herself!

Soon she moved into a studio space where she focused on her own style. While her eye disability progressed so did her need to feel balanced and calm! No more the self-pity; questions; inhibitions or self-doubt!

For a while she struggled with form, symmetry and design until she surrendered to the lesson of creating with feeling. When she finally let go of any attachments to what the final result needed to be, she gave herself the gift of freedom. She found herself appreciating the journey with clay from mud to magic. She began to fall in love with her perfectly imperfect creations. Her mind would be filled with conversations with Spirit. Even difficult days of sadness and fear were metamorphosised into compassion and acceptance. She felt she had rediscovered herself and there was no going back. ‘Forward’ was her chosen path as she learnt to let her heart see and her fingers talk.

Her travels back home to India continue to bless her with an abundance of inspiration. She enjoys camouflaging little messages of love into each and every piece that she creates. Her favorite creations are those that allow the user an open window into her journey of that particular lump of mud…. Every bump, curve, scrape, and dimple - intentional or not - was given purpose to be felt… by the fingers first… and eyes every time afterwards. In clay lies her peace… her redemption… her solace. Her intention is for the viewer to be a part of her journey as she invites them to re-discover clay from this Potter’s Eyes!
